7.A
open lane on Broadway, and we encourage Stanford Hospital and Clinics to pucrs
and prepare to use these devices for the upcoming 2010/2011 wet weather season.
Traffic control can be supported by the Redwood City Police Department during peak
events. This method will not reduce the presence of water in the vicinity of the Clinics,
but should help to maintain public right-of-way access to the property for patients and
employees.
To ensure that the existing infrastructure facilities are fully utilized, the city is cmmitted
to on-going annual assessment and maintenance of pump stations and pipes in the
area. Prior to each wet weather season, the city performs pre-season maintenance and
readiness inspections, including cleaning debris from drain inlets, flushing storm pipes,
and lowering levels of detention basins to increase storage capacity during rain events.
Year-round, the city inspects, tests, and exercises the pumps, generators, and the
electronic monitoring system (SCADA) to prepare for storm events.
City staff has further identified the following long-term options as potentially providing
more consistent and effective solutions:
. Establish a county-wide flood improvement district in San Mateo County to
fund and implement larger-scale flood protection improvements;
• Identify, procure, and utilize additional low-lying lands for storage of run-off
during storm and/or high tide events (we estimate that 100 acres or more
will be needed to be effective);
• Redirect the city's Broadway pump station volume from the Bayfront Canal
to the Steinberger Slough to reduce the inflow to the canal from the
Douglas Street and Fifth Avenue pump stations.
FISCAL IMPACT
Improvement cost for different options is unknown at this time, pending further study.
Approximately $6 million is available from the Capital Improvement Program fund for
improvement of the Fifth Avenue pump station and drainage area. .
 v
Gra e, P.E.
