6.1 E
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Ci Mana er
December 6, 2010
SUBJECT
Agreement between the City of Redwood City as fiscal agent for Redwood City 2020
and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County for fiscal year 2010-11.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement between the City of
Redwood City, as fiscal agent for Redwood City 2020, and the Legal Aid Society of San
Mateo County, in the amount of $81,000 for FY 2010-11.
BACKGROUND
Redwood City 2020 has received a grant from The Grove Foundation to support the
Linking Immigranfs to Benefits, Resources, and Education (LIBRE) Project. LIBRE will
focus on improving the effectiveness of current efforts to link immigrants to safety net
services through educational presentations, written material, and by providing legal
services to those who encounter barriers to accessing safety net services to which they
are entitled.
Through this agreement, Redwood City 2020 will contract with the Legal Aid Sociery of
San Mateo County to (1) participate as a member of the LIBRE Steering Committee and
(2) provide legal education, educational materials and legal services related to
immigrant rights for organizations and individuals participating in LIBRE.
The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, established in 1960, is a nonprofit
organization that provides civil legal services to San Mateo County's low-income
residents, serving over 2500 residents each year.
ALTERNATIVES
Council may elect not to authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for the program has been granted by the Grove Foundation to cover the cost of
this Agreement. No City funds wip be used for this effort. The City is serving as "pass
through" to Redwood City 2020 for funds awarded; therefore this Agreement will not
impact City services.
