Exhibit A
Initiative Description: One of the core community issues identified by RC 2020 is
health disparities among the community's youth. One of a number of disparities that
youth in our community face is access to the outdoors. Recognizing that being and
playing outdoors is an essential component of healthy human development. RC2020 has
incorporated YO -It's Youth Outdoors! as a critical element of the collaborative's
community based approach to addressing health disparities. RC 2020's community -based
approach includes engaging a youth to identify solutions to connect more youth to the joy
of spending time in the outdoors.
Initiative Purpose: Redwood City 2020 recognizes that too frequently, initiatives are
created without the buy in, co- development, and expertise of local populations and
constituents. This can inhibit the long term viability of well - intended efforts, and
minimize their impact. In response, RC 2020 is proposing to engage and empower young
people, through a Youth Action Research strategy, to identify solutions to the barriers
that keep youth indoors, sedentary, and disconnected from the natural world. The results
of the youth action research process will drive the development of a ladder of outdoor
- and environmental opportunities that will improve access to and participation in the
outdoors by low- income Redwood City youth. Through their research, youth will
examine specifically what the 5 key barriers identified by the Stewardship Council look
like to youth 13 -18 in our community. Together with RC 2020's partners youth will co-
create strategies to address these barriers. Their results will be shared to inform others in
the field.
City of Redwood City - 2009 Initiative Grant Page 6 of 7 December 1, 2009
