6.1C <br /> Page 1 <br /> REPORT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the City Manager <br /> February 7, 2011 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Award of Contract — Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> 1. Approve, by motion, the contract documents and award the contract for the <br /> Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real to Scapes, Inc. of Half <br /> Moon Bay, for their responsive and responsible low bid of $63,420.00 and <br /> authorize the City Manager to increase the contract amount up to 10% if <br /> necessary. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> The Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real project is proposed as <br /> the first in a series of projects to improve the aesthetics of the Woodside Road corridor. <br /> The project site is a ±54,500 square foot landscape area adjacent to the southbound <br /> off -ramp on Woodside Road at El Camino Real. This site is currently full of overgrown <br /> vegetation, trash, and weeds; it has become a retreat for transients. Cleaning up this <br /> area will create a safer, more inviting environment for area residents and visitors to <br /> Redwood City. Please see attached project location map. <br /> This first phase of improvements includes removing unattractive perimeter fencing; <br /> relocating signage; removing weeds, trash and overgrown vegetation; installing forestry <br /> mulch; and installing river rock along the drainage ditches. Trees other than redwood, <br /> oak, pepper, and established palms will be removed. <br /> Upon successful completion of this project, staff proposes to continue with aesthetic <br /> improvements to Woodside Road. Staff will return to Council in March to present other <br /> proposed enhancements to Woodside Road. Proposed future project sites include <br /> access ramps, medians, and shoulder areas along Woodside Road between Cypress <br /> Avenue and Broadway. Staff will also present details of potential agreement with <br /> Caltrans for adequate maintenance of these roadway area improvements. <br /> Two (2) bids were received at the informal bid opening on Monday, November 29, 2010 <br /> for the Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real and are summarized <br /> in the table below. <br />
