16-14-16 <br />LEAGUE GRASSROOTS IN ACTION <br />An occasional report on Grassroots activi- <br />ties by League divisions (outside of work spe- <br />cifically on the state budget crisis, which it <br />highlighted in the LOCAL Update article). <br />• Chamber of Commerce executives and <br />community members joined League Peninsula <br />Division members at a special Division dinner <br />focusing on Ethics, Elected Officials and the <br />Law. The event featured a distinguished panel <br />of experts, including Gerald F. Uelmen, Profes- <br />sor Law at Santa Clara University and a mem- <br />ber of the O.J. Simpson defense team, James <br />Fox, San Mateo County District Attorney, and <br />Judy Nadler, former Santa Clara Mayor and <br />Senior Fellow in Government Ethics at the <br />Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. The panel- <br />ists used real life experiences to demonstrate <br />the fine line that defines ethical behavior. Ac- <br />cording to Sheryl Pomeranz, Executive Director <br />of the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce, "This <br />was one of the most informative discussions I <br />have heard in a long time ". <br />Carlos, and Kevin Duggan, Mountain View, and <br />a fourth manager from Santa Clara County. <br />"Warming" will present an opportunity for high - <br />ranking business leaders as well as state and <br />local public sector officials to provide input on <br />restoring economic prosperity to the Golden <br />State. <br />"Silicon Valley is engaged in a battle like <br />never before in our 40 -year history," said Carl <br />Guardino, President and CEO of the Silicon <br />Valley Manufacturing Group. "We are fighting a <br />battle to regain our economic competitiveness, <br />grow our economy, and save the jobs of our <br />working families. <br />"No one silver bullet exists to win this battle," <br />Guardino continued. "We require an arsenal of <br />answers, many of which will surface when <br />Silicon Valley leaders come together at 'Warm- <br />ing California's Business Climate' on June 20." <br />One of the League's three strategic goals for <br />2003 is to "restore public confidence in govern- <br />ment, particularly city government ". League <br />divisions are working in their areas to help <br />implement the goals. <br />- The League has joined with the Silicon <br />Valley Manufacturing Group, the Bay Area <br />Forum, the City of San Jose, several cham- <br />bers of commerce and other interest groups to <br />present a conference on "Warming the Busi- <br />ness Climate ", on June 20th at the San Jose <br />Convention Center.
