(o,lG 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From Counc?I Member Howard
June 30, 2003
Subject
Request that funding be included in San Mateo County's Measure A sales tax extension for
the proposed Water Transit Authority ferry service for Redwood City.
Recommendation
Authorize the City Manager to sign the attached letter to the Chief Development Officer of the
San Mateo County Transportation Authority requesting that funding for the proposed Water
Transit Authority ferry service for Redwood City be included in San Mateo County's Measure
A sales tax extension.
Background
San Mateo County is developing a Transportation Expenditure Plan for the County's
Measure A sales tax extension, which is scheduled to take effect in 2009. This represents a
possible source of funding for a future Redwood City ferry service, as proposed by the San
Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority (WTA). The attached draft letter to the San
Mateo County Transportation Authority formally requests that funds be included in Measure
A for the proposed ferry service in Redwood City.
The Council has shown consistent support for the WTA over the last several years as that
organization has developed its program:
• on February 9, 1999 the Council adopted Resolution #13552 supporting the
development of water transit services to the Port of Redwood City;
on August 5, 2002, the Council adopted Resolution #14460 supporting inclusion of the
capital and operating costs of ferry service for Redwood City in San Mateo County's
priorities for the State Bridge Toll Expenditure Plan;
on January 27, 2003 the Council approved Resolution #14494 reaffirming support for
using State Bridge toll revenues for Redwood City ferry service, and supporting
additional funding through a portion of the San Mateo County sales tax extension.
Authorizing the City Manager to sign the attached letter will constitute Redwood City's official
request that funding for Redwood City ferry service be included in San Mateo County's
Measure A sales tax extension.
Alternative
The Council could choose not to authorize the attached letter, and therefore not formally
request Measure A funding for the proposed ferry service.
Fiscal Impact
There is no fiscal impact resulting from authorizing the attached letter.
