For more, see page 9.
UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE...
It has become a cliche to say that California is a diverse state. The cities of
California also are diverse, but city officials are united in their commitment to
keeping cities strong and vibrant. They also appreciate the havoc that state
government can play with city budgets when state leaders start eyeing local
revenues to address the state deficit.
For the last six months the League and cities have worked closely together
and with our LOCAL Coalition partners to fight back state budget proposals
that would hurt local services. With few exceptions, these efforts have been
very successful because we have not allowed others to divide us and we have
received substantial legislative support. When a rumor has arisen of a possible
effort to redistribute local revenues among local governments, I have conferred
with my colleagues at CSAC and CSDA and we have immediately reaffirmed
our commitment to discredit such proposals. Our boards of directors have
been equally supportive.
