I 1A2
LOCAL UPDATE
THE BUDGET STORY - PRESS QUOTES
• The League and the LOCAL coalition
issued several action alerts this week, as the
Senate and Assembly took up Democratic versions
of a state budget that included deep, disproportion-
ate cuts to local services. City officials and LOCAL
coalition partners responded by calling and faxing
their legislators, and continued to talk to local press
about the impacts the cuts would have on local
services.
• Assembly Democrats visited city councils,
boards of supervisors and other local groups in a
number of areas of the state this week, looking for
local help in delivering Republican votes on the
budget. (See "City Officials Tell Assembly visi-
tors...'.)
• League President (Oakland City Attorney)
John Russo was on the road in Orange County to
press the coalition budget message to the local
media and community. Russo interviewed with the
local radio and television stations KFWB 980 and
KOCE -TV. He also visited the City of Irvine to
record a message for Irvine Cable Television
(ICTV), which will be televised directly after airings
of the League's video, "Cloudy Skies Over Califor-
nia Cities ". Huntington Beach Television (HBTV) will
also air the video with Russo's message incorpo-
rated at the end.
See Also: "The Sudoet Story – Press Ouotes"
for samples of press coverage over the past week.
...............................
REGISTER NOW!
2003 LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA
CITIES ANNUAL CONFERENCE
September 7 —10, 2003
Sacramento Convention Center
To register online and view a preliminary
' conference program visit: '
www.cacities.org /ac or call 916 - 658 -8291
■
Editorials
The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, 6i20/03, No
Compromise, and No Progress on Stata
Budget. As
long as compromise remains a dirty word, the
stalemate will continue."
The Orange County Register, 6/20/03, Car
Taxation Without Representation. "The thresh-
old for the car tax going back up is not entirely
clear. But under any reasonable interpretation of
the law, the tax should increase now. And under
any reasonable budget for California, some
additional taxes are needed. Otherwise, schools
will be crippled, and too many poor and sick
people will suffer."
The Santa Cruz Sentinel, 6/22/03, "Local
Officials are Fighting Further Cuts by the
State. Here's Why They're Right. "Local pro-
grams have a much higher degree of accountabil-
ity than anything funded by the state of federal
governments.
