City of Redwood City <br /> • January 1973 . • <br /> PARKS LEADMAN <br /> DEFINITION <br /> Supervises and serves as a leader of a small crew in the installation <br /> and maintenance of park and landscaped areas; and to do related work <br /> as required. <br /> JOB CHARACTERISTICS <br /> An employee in this class serves as a working leadman of a small crew <br /> of Tree Trimmers, Gardeners, Park Maintenance Men, and Equipment Operator <br /> engaged in the installation and maintenance of park and landscaped areas <br /> of the City. Instructions regarding work to be done are received from <br /> the Parks Foreman. The Parks Foreman regularily inspects work performed <br /> for the compliance with standards. <br /> EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative only) <br /> Assigns maintenance tasks to subordinates and inspects work in process <br /> and upon completion; works with crews and skilled help in the completion <br /> of assignments; operates required park maintenance equipment; instructs <br /> and directs employees in proper and safe- operating methods; supervises <br /> and participates in applying fertilizers and fungicides, planting, <br /> pruning, mowing and watering activities; keeps working and time records <br /> of subordinate employees; requisitions supplies, equipment and materials <br /> supervises and participates in maintaining turf areas by mowing, trimming <br /> edging, spraying and performing closely related tasks; operates, makes <br /> minor repairs and adjusts sprinklers; supervises and participates in <br /> setting up benches, tables and other equipment for group recreation <br /> activities; takes the lead and oversees the cleaning and routine repair- <br /> ing of buildings. <br /> REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, <br /> Good knwledge of park maintenance operations such as the seeding, soddin <br /> rolling, mowing, raking and sprinkling of turf, spraying and pruning of <br /> trees and shrubs, and the care of flowers; practical working knowledge <br /> of elementary accident prevention practices applicable to park main- <br /> tenance activities; some skill in making minor repairs and adjustments <br /> to hand and power mowers; ability to lay out and supervise the work of <br /> others; ability to keep records and reports, and to work from oral and <br /> written instructions, ability to get along well with others; good <br /> physical condition. <br /> EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING <br /> Three years of experience in groundskeeping, gardening or landscape work <br /> and completion of the eighth grade supplemented by technical courses <br /> in horticulture or related field.
