ts8 4
created in a neighborhood when neighbors are notified, under the more restrictive
conditional use permit process; they may incorrectly assume that the city can
prohibit this use or deny the permit if they object to the family child care home.
Other points that we request be considered are:
• Family child care homes are an important part of the child : are resources in your
community. They provide services to families which are rarely available in child care
centers, such as care in `non - traditional hours' and care of siblings together. They
provide a smaller, home -like setting which is preferred by many families.
• Family child care homes provide a large portion of the infant & toddler care spaces
available to families, because the cost of operating infant care centers is so high.
• Enabling family child care homes to expand from `small' to `large' (adding up to six
children) is the least expensive way to build child care capacity in the community. The
provider assumes the costs of additional equipment, staff, etc. In comparison, the cost
of building a new child care center in this county is estimated at around $20,000 per
licensed space.
On behalf of the members of the San Mateo County Child Care Partnership Council,
we thank you for considering our input on this important matter.
A Sincerely,
Mark Church, Supervisor John Mehl, San Mateo County
San Mateo County Supervisor Superintendent of Schools
Chair, Child Care Partnership Council Co- Chair, Child Care Partnership Council
Cc: Members, San Mateo County Child Care Partnership Council
Attachment
