6.1.B. - Page 1 <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Cou nci I <br /> From the City Manager <br /> J u ne 20, 2011 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Temporary suspension of parking meter rates in downtown <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Approve by motion, the temporary suspension of parking meter rates in downtown on <br /> Monday, July 4th, 2011. <br /> BAC KG RO U N D <br /> On July 4, 2011, downtown Redwood City will be the site of a large parade and <br /> celebration in honor of Independence Day. Due to the parade route and various <br /> celebration-related events, much of downtown's metered on-street parking spaces will <br /> be unavailable. Staff is requesting the suspension of parking meter rates on July 4, <br /> 2011 from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm on the following streets and city-owned parking <br /> lots: 1) all streets bounded by Veterans Boulevard, Brewster Avenue, EI Camino Real, <br /> and Walnut Street, and 2) off-street parking lots: Perry Lot, Winslow Lot, Main Street <br /> Lot, City Hall lot, and Library Lots A and B. <br /> City Council may temporarily suspend parking meter rates according to the City <br /> M u n icipal Code Section 20.133: <br /> Sec. 20.133. PROVISIONS FOR TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF METER <br /> RATES: <br /> The provisions of this Division may be suspended from time to time by motion of <br /> the City Council in any case where the Council finds that strict compliance would <br /> not serve the public interest, including but not limited to the use of public streets <br /> and sidewalks for celebrations, special public events, celebration of holiday <br /> seasons and any other such activity or purpose as the City Council in its sole <br /> discretion shall determine. No. 2329, § 1, 5- <br /> 12-08) <br /> ALTERNATIVES <br /> Council may choose to enforce parking meter rates in downtown on July 4, 2011. <br /> FISCAL IMPACT <br /> The city will not receive an estimated $1,400.00 in revenue from the suspension of the <br /> parking meter rates on Monday, July 4. <br />
