This law was enacted in January of2001 when state lawmakers like myself took a <br />proactive approach to reducing the number of abandoned infant cases. This law allows mothers <br />to leave their unwanted newborns at hospita1! and firehouses without facing criminal charges. <br /> <br />Sacramento County recently joined Los Angeles County as the only two fire departments <br />participating in this program. Since the inc:ption of the law 20 babies have been successfu11y <br />suaendered in the state, two at fire stations in Los Angeles and one at a fire station in <br />Sacrammto. During the same period 38 infants were abandoned illegally, with only 21 found <br />aJive. <br /> <br />As you can see, there is still a need for safe havens where trained professionals can receive these <br />precious newborns.
