His
police canine, Largo. is approximately ten years old and his time as a productive police
canine is at an end. The police staff has contacted Tyson Kennels, the vendor through
which the department has purchased its existing police dogs, and Kennel personnel have
confirmed largo is too old to continue police duties with a different handler.
It has been past practice of the department to allow police officers to purchase their dogs
upon the animals' retirement. Officer Farley similarly wishes to purchase his partner for the
aforementioned amount of money. In return for allowing the purchase of the canine,
Officer Farley would agree to sign a release and hold harmless form, and contin~e to ~are
for the dog in the manner he has become accustomed to.
Alternative
City Council could direct the police department to sell the canine on the open market.
Liability concerns makes this option problematic.
Fiscal Impact
None. All police dogs are purchased through donations from the community.
1-~ C!;</a 0/ j.
., 7 Y1' ~;--..-
. // / L/f.-Ll/ rr
Ronald Matuszak . Carlos G.
