5.1F
REPORT Page 1
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
Fro'l' the Cit~ Mana~r
July 24, 2006
Subject
The San Mateo County Parks & Recreation Foundation annual "Tour de Peninsula"
Recreational Bicycle Ride.
Recommendation
The City Council authorize execution of a Letter Permit for the "Tour de Peninsula."
Background
The San Mateo County Parks & Recreation Foundation, with the assistance of RhodyCo
Productions, is requesting permission to use certain streets in Redwood City for its annual
bicycle ride, which draws hundred of cyclists. The ride will take place on Sunday, August
6,2006 and cover a large portion of San Mateo County, including a portion of Redwood
City.
The event is a fundraiser for the San Mateo County Parks & Recreation Foundation. The
Foundation was established in 1998 to provide financial support for recreational,
environmental, and educational programs, including other projects of the San Mateo
County Parks & Recreation Division.
The Letter Permit grants authority to post "No Parking" signs on both sides of Brewster
Avenue from Duane Street to Alameda de las Pulgas and on both sides of Alameda de las
Pulgas from Brewster Avenue to the northern city limits. Parking will be prohibited from
6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. As they have in the past years, RhodyCo Productions will notify
residents along the bicycle route of the parking restrictions prior to the event.
The Letter Permit contains the standard "hold harmless" and insurance provisions.
Alternatives
1. The City Council could choose not to authorize the execution of the Letter Permit for
the posting of "No Parking" signs on the streets requested. However, the selection
of this alternative would require the large number of bicyclists participating in this
event to share the roadway with motorists, resulting in traffic congestion and public
safety concerns.
Fiscal Impact
RhodyCo Productions will pay for the services of two police officers to control traffic
between 8:00 a.m. and 1 :00 p.m. on the day of the eyent and they will provide personnel to
conduct the necessary postings of the affected roadways under the supervision of the
police department.
-<<.,
