.. ■ . 1 I ■ ■ 9 ! l I
• I ' I
REPOR T

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
April 26, 2004
Subject
Vehicle Maintenance Agreement with the City of Foster City
Recommendation
By Motion authorize the execution of a maintenance agreement with the City of Foster City
for the maintenance and repair of their Fire DepartmenYs vehicles and apparatus.
Background
Redwood City currently has vehicle maintenance agreements with the Town of Atherton,
Town of Woodside and San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force. In February 2004, the
Foster City Fire Department solicited a proposal from the City of Redwood City to provide
maintenance services on their fire trucks and support vehicles. Foster City has three (3)
fire pumpers, two (2) ladder trucks and two (2) command vehicles which require periodic
maintenance. Unlike Redwood City, Foster City does not have in-house certified fleet
maintenance for fire apparatus, and they have been unable to find a reliable company who
provides a high quality service for their equipment.

The City of Redwood City's Equipment Services Division of the Public Works Services
Department has certified fire technicians who provide this type of service and the Foster
Cit Fir h'
y e C ief has solicited our support. A draft maintenance agreement has been re-
viewed b the Foster Cit Fire Chief and i
.
Y y C ty Manager and they a ree with the terms and
. . 9
conditions written into the agreement.
Alternative
The alternative of rejecting Foster Gity Fire DepartmenYs proposal would forFeit the
opportunity of generating additional revenue and in turn lowering our internal costs of
maintaining the City's fleet. Providing the maintenance service for Foster City Fire
Department vehicles would not compromise the service level currently being provided to
Redwood City's vehicles.
Fiscal Impact
The associated revenue for the maintenance and repair of Foster City's Fire Fleet will be
approximately $20,000 annually, based on a$95.21 per hour labor rate. This revenue is
used to completely offset the cost of providing services, and will back-fill so apacity that
wiil be unused due to Redwood City fleet reductions related to pending dg r duction
^ / . ,
C .
La anvacz Peteringram E er
...
Public Works Superintendent Public Works Se ices Director City Manager
Attachment: Agreement
