April 26, 2004 Subject Execution of Agreement for the repair of dry-rot and termite damage in lifeguard rooms at Hoover Swimming Pool Building Recommendation - - Execute an agreement with R. J. Construction of Redwood City, California, in the amount of $17,910 for the repair of damage to a city facility caused by dry-rot and termites. Background In August of 2003, informal bids were solicited from five general contractors for repair to damaged areas of the lifeguard rooms at the Hoover Swimming Pool facility. Three contractors did not return phone messages. The two bids that were received are summarized below: BIDDER BID AMOUNT ~. R. J. Construction of Redwood City, CA $ 17,910 Rodi Construction of Redwood City, CA $ 19,535 Although several months have passed since the submission of their proposal, R. J. Construction has indicated in a letter dated April 3, 2004, their willingness to honOr their August 25, 2003 proposal with no changes or amendments. The reason this project has been delayed in being presented to City Council is because of scheduling conflicts within the building maintenance and repair section. These conflicts have since been resolved. Alternative Reject these bids and direct staff to find alternate ways to make these necessary repairs. Fiscal Impact It is fiscally prudent and appropriate to use a contractor for this work rather than city staff because the cost of the project and the scope of work require more funding and more time than maintenance staff has available to dedicate to this project.
