54-1-Z
The Legislative Analyst's Office also notes, in summary, that Proposition 70 would result in
more slot machines, additional casino games such as craps and roulette, fewer
regulations (such as environmental reviews) on casinos, and a longer agreement term (99
years).
The Governor's existing compact with the tribal gaming interests reportedly will provide $1
billion to the State's general fund this year and hundreds of millions more every year. This
infusion of funds is important for local govemments, including Redwood City, in that it will
contribute to the State's financial well-being and therefore help to reduce State budget
pressures on cities.
The League of California Cities opposes Proposition 70, and is urging all of its member
cities to pass resolutions in opposition. The League also opposes Proposition 68 (on
which the Council has already taken an "oppose" position) and is supporting Proposition
1 A(on which the Council has already taken a"support" position). These three measures —
68, 70, and 1 A— are the three key propositions which the League and the Govemor have
made top priorities for this election. The League has expressed the importance of having
cities and other local governments in Califomia take consistent positions on these
measures.
Proposition 70 is also opposed by more than 300 law enforcement, public safety,
education, environmental and taxpayer leaders and organizations, including Califomia
Police Chiefs Association, California State Sheriffs' Association, Califomia District
Attorneys Association, Califomia State Association of Counties, Califomia State Building
Trades Council, Unite HERE!, and the California Taxpayer Protection Committee, among
many others.
Alternative
The Council could choose not to adopt this resolution and not go on record in opposition to
Proposition 70.
Fiscal Impact
There is no fiscal impact associated with adoption of this resolution.
 /

, -,
Malcolm Smith M da onzl z Ed Everett
Public Communications Assistant to the City Manager City Manager
Manager
Attachments
Draft Resolution
Legislative Analyst's Office analysis of Proposition 70
Text of Proposition 70
