<br /> 7A <br /> Page 4 <br /> RES 0 L UTI 0 N N o. <br /> RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SAN MATEO COUNTY PARKS FOR <br /> THE FUTURE ORDINANCE, A 1/8 CENT SALES TAX MEASURE, ON <br /> THE NOVEMBER, 2006 COUNTYWIDE BALLOT <br /> WHEREAS, regional and local parks serve as recreational, social, and cultural <br /> centers for Redwood City communities, providing important venues for youth <br /> enrichment and safety; community identity; protection of natural, cultural and historic <br /> sites; parkland and open space; and tourism, and <br /> WHEREAS, in order to maintain a high quality of life for Redwood City's growing <br /> population, a continuing investment in parks, recreation facilities, as well as natural, <br /> cultural and historic regional resources is needed, and <br /> WHEREAS, Redwood City parks and recreation programs have not been funded <br /> at an optimal level for many years, and continue to be reduced due to budget difficulties, <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, these reductions have resulted in staffing cuts, a deterioration of <br /> overall community aesthetics, longer intervals between litter pick-up and bathroom <br /> cleaning, deferred maintenance, removal or closure of facilities that need repair or do <br /> not meet safety standards, and the elimination of recreation programs, and <br /> WHEREAS, the need to increase active community parkland available to <br /> Redwood City residents was a major finding in the Strategic Plan for 2004 and Beyond <br /> presented to the City Council in December 2004 by the Parks, Recreation and <br /> Community Services Department, and <br /> WHEREAS, the Parks for the Future 1/8 Cent Sales Tax Measure (1/8 Cent <br /> Sales Tax) was developed and agreed to by representatives of San Mateo County <br /> (County) and the Cities and Special Districts within the County in order to address part <br /> of the anticipated budget needs of parks and recreation programs and facilities in the <br /> County, and <br /> WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County adopted an <br /> ordinance to place the 118 Cent Sales Tax Measure before the County voters this <br /> coming November, and <br /> WHEREAS, the County-wide sales tax would increase from its current 8.25% to <br /> 8.375%, and <br /> WHEREAS, the 1/8 cent Sales Tax Measure would support parks and recreation <br /> activities in the County, the Cities located within the County, the Ladera and Highlands <br /> r Recreation Districts and Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District for a period of 25 <br /> years, and <br /> A TTY/RESO/RESO.1642 <br /> 081706 <br /> 1 <br /> - <br />
