To the Honor$ Aayor;nd ty ounil'
rom #he C Mana er
October 13, 2003
Subject
Approval of the Updated Engineering Standards for Public and Private Streets
Recommendation
Adopt a resolution approving the updated three volume document entitled, "Engineering
Standards for the City of Redwood City."
Background
The previous edition of the City's "Engineering Standards" was approved in December
of 1991, and the standards were updated again in 1998. These standards consist of
three volumes: (1) Standard Technical Specifications, (2) City Standard Details, and
(3) Design Criteria. These documents help direct engineers and developers on the
minimum requirements for designing public and private street improvements.
These three volumes of specifications and details need to be updated periodically in
order to meet current Codes and to contain the latest technology in materials and
_ methods of construction for public works projects. Highlighted in this updated edition
are some new requirements which include the following:
 Details for Parkway Style Sidewalk
 Sidewalk Repair
:- Street Lighting with Low Pressure Sodium Vapor lamps
 Break away sign posts
:- Root barriers for street trees
 Fire Hydrants with larger outlets
:- Double Check Valve backflow prevention on water lines
Storm Water Discharge Regulations per NPDES
: Fire Truck Turn-around
 Water Demand Projection Criteria
The draft of these documents has been reviewed by the Engineering & Construction
staff, Planning Staff, and the Public Works Services Department. Where appropriate,
the comments received were incorporated into the documents.
The result of the adoption of these updated documents will become our new
"Engineering Standards for the City of Redwood City". These standards will be
maintained for public distribution in the Engineering & Construction office.
The three volumes are available for review in the Clerk's office. If you have any
specific questions, please call Mr. Jon Lynch, City Engineer, at (650) 780-7371.
Page 1 oi 2
