0. B-1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
November 8,2004
Subject
Reimburse Redwood City Elementary School District for Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter, and
Paving Repairs
Recommendation
By Motion, approve the reimbursement ofthe Redwood City Elementary School District in
the amount of $20,000 for site repairs constructed on Avenue del Ora adjacent to John Gill
School
Background
Over the past several years, the City has been working with the School District on design
and construction at several school sites to create safer campuses and safer pedestrian
movement and routes. A cooperative Safe Traffic Options Program (STOP) committee was
created comprised of City staff from Engineering and Construction and Public Works
Services, School District transportation staff, interested Principals and school staff, and
parents serving on school traffic subcommittees. Vice Mayor Pierce has also participated
in the discussions and coordination.
Staff has developed an effective relationship with those schools that were interested in
improving the pedestrian traffic and safety and student drop-off conditions at their school.
The different activities varied from improving on-site flow and providing educational flyers
to the parents to varying levels of site modifications - ranging from new signs to re-
construction.
The John Gill School Project included the creation of a turn-out lane on Avenue del Ora.
This required the re-construction of over 300 feet of new curb, the installation of a valley
gutter to preserve the original storm water flow, and the widening of the existing sidewalk.
The total project cost was over $98,000. During the plan review stages, the project scope
increased from the original design. In order to assure the project could be completed,
Public Works Services staff agreed to reimburse the school district up to $20,000 towards
the sidewalk, curb, gutter, and street paving construction, if the project costs exceeded the
original project design estimate of $50,000.
The completed project will result in the school district funding over $78,000 and the City
contributing $20,000. The project is completed and meeting the desired improvements for
traffic flow at peak student drop-off and pick-up times.
GmIword/councll reportsljohn gill reirroursement
Page 1 of 2
-. ,~ ~-- T-u- -
