Subject
Award of Contract - Community Activities Building Renovation
Recommendation
Approve the Contract Documents and award the contract for the Community Activities
Building Renovation Project to the lowest responsible bidder, Solid Builders of Colma,
California, for their bid of $219,646.
Background
The Community Activities Building (CAB) is located at 1400 Roosevelt Avenue in the
City of Redwood City, and is maintained by the Parks, Recreation, and Community
Services Department (PRCS). The CAB was built in 1970,' and over the years, has
received minor renovations.
Because the CAB is in constant use for meetings, classes, and also being rented out
for other special events, it is showing major wear and tear. Also, the existing public
restrooms are not in compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards.
Therefore, staff recommends that the facility undergo an upgraded renovation.
The scope of work for this project consists of clearing and demolition of existing interior
finishes and other appurtenances, installation of new building interior finishes such as
floor tiles and bases, carpet, wall painting, wall covering; removal and installation of
new doors and frames, ceiling tiles, wall tiles, toilet fixtures and accessories, toilet
partitions, lighting fixtures, signage, and other incidentals; painting work; and hazardous
materials/asbestos abatement.
Six (6) bids for the above-referenced project were opened in the Office of the City
Engineer (public counter - Maps & Records area) Wednesday, November 3, 2004, and
are summarized below.
Rank Bidder Amount
1. Solid Builders - Colma, CA $219,646.00
2. Coastside Associates - Halfmoon Bay, CA $220,.877.00
3. Beals Martin, Inc. - Redwood City, cA $224,822.00
4. P & A Construction - San Francisco, CA $230,000.00
5. JMA Construction - San Francisco, CA $236,000.00
6. John Plane Construction, Inc. - BurlinQame, CA $279,000.00
The low bid of $219,646.00 is approximately 2.16% higher than the Engineer's Estimate
of $215,000.00. Based on the bids received, staff believes that the low bid is
reasonable and responsive, and recommends awarding the contract to Solid Builders.
