Downtown Business Group representatives and members Janet Borgens, Cheryl <br /> Osbourne, and Nina Kadera, event co -chair (the other co- chair, Keith Kadera, was not <br /> present) recognized and presented awards to the winners of the Hometown Holidays <br /> Tree Decorating Contest (presentation on file). <br /> B. Parade Awards Presentation — Janet Borgens, Hometown Holidays <br /> Parade Coordinator <br /> Janet Borgens and Nina Kadera presented two awards for the Hometown Holidays <br /> parade. The Virginia Ball award and a $500 check were presented to the Professional <br /> Ballet School. The Judges' Choice award and a $500 check were presented to the <br /> representatives /coaches of the Redwood City Skating Club. Ms. Borgens <br /> acknowledged and thanked the event judges for their participation as well as the City for <br /> its support. <br /> Nina Kadera spoke on her and Keith Kadera's behalf (as event co- chairs) to thank the <br /> committee and volunteers for their work. She noted that they, the Kaderas, have <br /> coordinated these events for five years and plan to continue to do so as these events <br /> have become bigger. <br /> One Council Member expressed her thanks to the couple for their work on behalf of <br /> Council and the community. Another Council Member added her thanks and noted that <br /> the Downtown Business Group provided leadership, fund - raised over $30 thousand, <br /> and got the sponsorships for the event. <br /> 6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> Dennis Logie spoke about the nonprofit Redwood Senior's Softball club and how <br /> various members are actively involved in serving the community in many volunteer <br /> activities outside of this club. He displayed the $4,815 check they donated to the City <br /> for new scoreboards at three City parks. <br /> A Council Member announced that Redwood City will have its first Lunar New Year <br /> celebration on Saturday, February 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Redwood <br /> City, Courthouse Plaza. He said this event was in partnership with Redwood City <br /> International, the Civic Cultural Commission, and presenting sponsor AT & T. This <br /> event will include lion dancers, the Red Panda Acrobats, martial arts demonstrations, <br /> arts, crafts, kids, foods, and more. He invited everyone to come and help celebrate the <br /> lunar New Year. <br /> Dee Eva spoke about Corporal Derek Simonetta who died in Afghanistan this past <br /> December. She said Council Member Pierce had contacted her about a movement to <br /> plant a memorial tree at the Sequoia Veterans Memorial in his honor and the total <br /> pledges are $1,800 and counting.
