6.2.A. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
July 11, 2011
SUBJECT
Final Acceptance —Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real
RECOMMENDATION
Accept, by motion, the Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real, and
authorize the release of bonds and the retention according to city procedures.
BACKGROUND
On February 7, 2011, Council awarded the construction contract for the Woodside Road
Off -ramp Median Landscaping at El Camino Real to Scapes, Inc. of Half Moon Bay.
The project was awarded for a base bid of $63,420.00. Construction began in April,
2011, substantial completion was achieved by May, 2011, and final completion in June,
2011. The project is successfully completed in accordance with the plans and
specifications. One (1) change order for $755.00 was issued to remove a pedestrian
safety hazard and additional tree. The final contract amount is $64,175.00, which is
1.2% more than the contract amount initially awarded.
The Woodside Road Median Improvements at El Camino Real were proposed as the
first in a series of projects to improve the aesthetics of the Woodside Road corridor. The
project site is a ±54,500 square foot landscape area adjacent to the southbound off -
ramp on Woodside Road at El Camino Real. This site was originally full of overgrown
vegetation, trash, and weeds; it had become a retreat for transients. Cleaning up this
area created a safer, more inviting environment for area residents and visitors to
Redwood City. Staff will return to Council in the near future to present
recommendations for other projects to enhance Woodside Road.
ALTERNATIVES
Council may choose not to accept the project or authorize the release of bonds and
retention which would be contrary to the terms of the contract, prior Council action, and
public contracting code.
FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funding for the work of this project was previously approved and appropriated
as Gas Tax Construction Fund — Woodside Road Widening Landscape.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
Not applicable to this report
