• Conducts fire prevention inspections of dwellings, public assemblies, and commercial, industrial, and public establishments to ensure compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to fire and life safety; Identifies common, special, structural, and panic hazards and recommend pre-fire planning activities; issue orders to comply with codes, inspect and test fire protection systems; • Examines the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids and other hazardous materials; • Makes recommendations regarding correction of hazards. • Participates in presentation of public education. • Participates in training; • Serves as instructor as assigned; • Performs a variety of administrative duties to maintain inventories, make purchases, and make recommendations to record data and other administrative procedures. • Attends training sessions which include firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of all equipment and related tools; participates in annual testing of hoses and fire apparatus; cleans apparatus and equipment and performs general custodial duties as required; serves as acting Fire Captain as required; • Operates power, hydraulic and air equipment in difficult emergency conditions; � Manages and accomplishes projects as assigned. • Perform other duties as assigned. Firefighter/Paramedic Essential and Important Duties (Illustrative Only) Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Responds to medical emergencies; performs primary and secondary physical assessment of ill or injured persons; treat patients in accordance with the San Mateo County Emergency Medical Services Protocols and Fire Department policy; • Operates radio-telephone equipment and communicates medical information to base hospital medical personnel, communications dispatchers and others; • Conducts research and makes necessary reports and records; • Respond to and perform skilled tasks at emergency and non-emergency scenes; • Serves as a preceptor for paramedic and emergency medical technician trainees as directed. • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of emergencies such as; structural, residential, commercial, industrial, hazardous materials, vehicle, and wild land fires; perform fire control activities and utilize strategies in the areas of victim rescue, entry, exposure tactics, ventilation, fire containment and extinguishment, and salvage work; • Lay and connect hose, hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; ventilate burning structures; make forcible entries and evacuate occupants; • Drives and performs a variety of response and utility vehicles, equipment,tools, devices, and vehicles including lifting, hoisting, spreading, and pulling equipment, building heating and ATTY/AGR/2012/AMENDMENTS/AMEND NO.2 SAN CARLOS FIRE REV:09-06-12 VR Page 14 of 15
