Mr. Phong Du, P.E. - - August 25, 1997
Page 2

· 1968 Linear Feet of New 12-inch PVC Sanitary Sewer Main to Replace
Existing 6-, 8- and 10-inch VCP Sanitary Sewer Main

· 56 Linear Feet of New 12-inch Sanitary Sewer Main

It appears that the trench depths will range from 3 to 11 feet below centerline of the
street. Based upon previous geologic mapping in this area, we anticipate that most,
if not all of the excavations will occur in unconsolidated alluvial sediment. The west
end of the Jefferson Avenue site may encounter bedrock. We understand that all
trench segments to be tested will be properly shored for stability and safe entry for
testing, pursuant to the specifications of the City Engineer.

Purpose and Scope of Services

The purpose of the requested geotechnical services is to confirm that the earth
materials used for the project are in accordance with the specifications in the
Contract Document for pipe bedding and trench backfill, and that they conform to the
minimum compaction requirements in the same (Technical Specifications, Section
02202 pertaining to Trenching and Backfill).

The scope of services will include:

1. Perform laboratory materials acceptance standard tests based upon American
Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Caltrans (Calif.) test methods.
Test that may be required include:

· Gradation (ASTM D-422 or Calif. 202)
· Durability Index (Calif. 229)
· R-Value (Calif. 301)
· Sand Equivalent (Calif. 217)
· Plasticity Index (ASTM D-4318)
· Modified Proctor Compaction Test (ASTM D-1557)

2. Perform field nuclear density testing to confirm minimum compaction
requirements per the Technical Specifications;

3. Documentation of geotechnical site observations and field nuclear density tests.
If desired, we will submit Daily Reports to the City Engineer on a weekly basis
describing the activities of the Contractor at the time the geotechnical
observations and testing occur, and will include the locations of all field nuclear
density tests.

Earth Investigations Consultants
