6.3.C. - Page 1
RE PO RT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
August 22, 2011
SUBJECT
Amendment of Human Resources Technician Classification
RECOMMENDATION
By resolution, approve the amendment of the Human Resources Technician
classification.
BACKGROUND
The Human Resources Technician is a generalist position performing paraprofessional
work in support of multiple human resources functions. Due to staffing reductions and
realignment of work, the duties of the Human Resources Technician have expanded to
include support of the workers' compensation and employee benefits activities. These
duties are more consistent with the existing classification of Employee Benefits
Coordinator. The organizational need and preference is to retain and expand the
existing Human Resources Technician classification to be a broad generalist position
providing support in all areas of human resources including employee benefits and
workers' compensation, recruitment and selection, classification and compensation,
employee relations, and employee personnel information
In conjunction with the addition of new duties to the Human Resources Technician
classification, it is proposed that the salary range for the position be increased from
$4589 -$5504 per month to $5145 -$6178 per month. The increase would represent a
12.25% range adjustment for the Human Resources Technician, and bring the position
to the same level as Employee Benefits Coordinator
ALTERNATIVES
1. The Council could take no action and advise staff to continue use of existing
staffing and job descriptions.
2. The Council could advise staff to make further evaluation and recommend
alternative classification changes.
