6.1.A. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
September 12, 2011
SUBJECT
Continued Use of the Redwood City Police Department's Firearms Range by the
California Highway Patrol
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager or designee to execute the renewal
of an agreement allowing the California Highway Patrol to use the Redwood City Police
Department's Firearms Range.
BACKGROUND
The Redwood City Police Department (RCPD) has an indoor 25 yard, four lane firing
range. The California Highway Patrol, Menlo Park Police, and Belmont Police
Departments have contracted with the City for use of the range. Currently, the RCPD
charges outside agencies an hourly rate equivalent of $50 per hour of usage.
The California Highway Patrol has used the range dating back more than 10 years and
is requesting continued use of the range. CHP's current contracting procedures require
action by the City Council approving this agreement. The Agreement allows the CHP to
use the firing range at a cost of $24,000 for a term of two (2) years, 09/01/11 through
08/31/13.
ALTERNATIVES
The City Council may deny the request to approve this contract.
FISCAL IMPACT
The agreement is expected to generate $12,000 in general fund revenues per year.
