The topic of
the Assembly was Greening Our Communities: Healthy People, Healthy Bay, Healthy Economy.
There were 2 presentations that were especially appropriate to Redwood City: Greening our Neighborhoods
and Communities for a Sustainable Bay Area and the Successful Implementation in Bay Area Communities.
The presentation by Ed Harrington, the General Manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission,
provided information on green streets for cleaner storm water and rationales for developing more "green"
infrastructure vs. the "grey" infrastructure that has been the basis of engineering solutions in many
communities. Examples of where SF is investing in modifying streets, creating rain gardens to slow down
water prior to hitting the storm drains, green roofs and road -side planters to filter storm water may be of
interest to Redwood City.
Jen McGraw, Director of Climate Change Program, Center for Neighborhood Technology provided some
compelling information regarding a template for gauging the costs and benefits of using a variety of green
infrastructure investments and looking at community problems holistically.
Mark Luce, Supervisor of Napa County, presented a broad stakeholder solution that has been crafted to
manage, finance and radically change the issue of flooding in Napa. The resulting investment, stakeholder
buy -in and creation of a beautiful, sustainable river frontage hold promise for Redwood City's issue with
bay -front flooding.
I will forward my notes with website contact information to the City Manager for sharing with the appropriate
staff members.
L October 19, 2011
The Administrative Code requires reports of conferences or meetings for which a council member requests per diem or expense reimbursement.
Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting.
