Subject: Project Information for Regional Bicycle Sharing Pilot Project in Redwood City
Background
Redwood City is working with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air district), the recipient of
a Bay Area Climate Initiatives grant and partner agencies (SFMTA, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation
Authority, San Mateo County Transit District, and County of San Mateo) to initiate bike sharing
regionally through this pilot project. The project plans to deploy 1000 bicycles along the peninsula
transportation corridor in spring 2012 for a 12 month pilot program.
Bike sharing — Description
Bicycle sharing allows members to check a bicycle out from a system station and use it on a temporary
basis. Bikes can be returned to any of the systems stations. Approximately ten stations will be installed
across Redwood City, focusing on transit corridors and key destinations. Individual stations will have
room for 5— 20 bikes.
Station - Description
A project contractor has not been selected yet, so final station design has not been determined. Typical
bike sharing stations include bikes at docks, empty docks to receive bikes, a kiosk to conduct
transactions, a solar panel to provide power to operate the station, and a possible a message board for
providing maps and information for the users.
Stations will be modular, to allow varying size and configurations as required by each location. The will
be solar powered and not require additional wiring or electrical connections to operate. Excavation will
not be required to secure the station.
Station — Locations
Locations will be close to transit corridors and near key destinations within Redwood City. All Bike share
locations will be located in the public right of way on City of Redwood City property. Stations when
located on a public walkway will leave minimum five feet of clearance for pedestrians. Stations will be
placed two feet minimum away from curb ramps, crosswalks, and curb cuts. Stations will provide ted
feet of clearance to all fire hydrants.
Locations currently being considered include the downtown Redwood City library, Red Morton
Community Center, Kaiser Hospital, Mezes Park, Safford Park, Marshall Parking Garage, Jardin de Ninos,
the Broadway Road corridor and Sequoia High School.
