He opined that development or a second set of pumps could be
beneficial and the provided handout was to provide a visual.
Andy Coe, presenting Stanford Hospital and Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center, said
they had worked with the City and other stakeholders on this issue for about three years
and they had hoped for more progress. He expressed their concerns regarding this
complex issue and said they would continue to work on a viable solution with staff on a
storm by storm basis, and continue to offer community and patient services.
Mayor Ira provided some background on the solutions that had been looked at and how
challenging this really was. He asked staff to provide numbers on the amount of water
that became part of the problem and the size of the canal. Mr. Ekern said that we was
looking for 400 acre feet of storage for water. Mayor Ira provided some history on
Council's prior attempts to resolve this and for him the short answer was finding bay
land to pump this water to. This Council Member said he was seeking a financial and
real commitment from the other agencies and neighbors to make a solution real.
Another Council Member said that this discussion would continue and he was looking
forward to that dialogue. One Council Member thanked all those present for coming out
and sharing their concerns.
8. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A. City Council Member Report of Conference /Meeting Attendance
- Council Member Bain noted the Old Factory Spaghetti Restaurant just opened and he
was hopeful this was the beginning of many more other businesses coming to
downtown.
- Council Member Foust reported that she and Council Member Pierce attended the 50
anniversary of the Peninsula Hills Women's Club and it was a very positive event. She
mentioned how much this organization had done. She also attended the 100
Anniversary of the Redwood City Women's Club and she thoroughly enjoyed the
program. This Council Member found Mr. Bautista's comments very disturbing and
concerning. She went on the County of San Mateo's public index and the two cases he
had were dismissed so the city was not liable or at fault for what he was alleging. She
would like to have Council provide a response and because in her opinion this was
hurting the Council's reputation.
City Attorney Thompson said that Mr. Bautista had past and current litigation and it
might be useful to correct some of his misstatements. This Council Member also
mentioned the other man who spoke about the parking ticket.
Dr. Bell provided some background on this particular issue and said that he could come
back to this forum with more information on the parking ticket. He was looking forward
to coming back with clarifying information. Mayor Ira said that he had been aware of this
matter and it was a clear legal determination so he did not think there was a need for
follow -up. Dr. Bell would prefer to bring this back for the benefit of the public.
JOINT CITY COUNCIL/REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY BOARD October 24, 2011
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 9
