Adopt a resolution approving the application for the designation of the subject <br /> property described below as a Historic landmark per Section 40.6 and 40.7, "The <br /> Historic Preservation Ordinance," Chapter 40 of the Redwood City Code. <br /> 2. Adopt a resolution approving a historic Preservation Contract for the subject property <br /> per Section 40.5 K., "The Historic Preservation Ordinance," Chapter 40 of the Redwood <br /> City Code. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> On January 4, 2011, an application was submitted for landmark designation of 1842 <br /> Whipple Avenue. On February 10, 2011, a recommendation supporting the landmark <br /> designation was forwarded to the Planning Commission by the Historic Resources <br /> Advisory Committee (HRAC). On June 6, 2011, the HRAC met on site and <br /> subsequently recommended to approve a Mills Act Contract for the subject property <br /> (Attachments 2 and 4). On November 15, 2011, the Planning Commission supported <br /> the recommendation of the HRAC and initiated a public hearing on December 6, 2011. <br /> At the public hearing, the Planning Commission unanimously recommended to the City <br /> Council that the application for the proposed historic landmark designation, as well as <br /> the Mills Act Contract, be approved. No opposition to this application was received <br /> (Attachment 3). <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> The Historic Resources Advisory Committee and Planning Commission confirmed the <br /> historic status of the single-family residence, as described in the property's historic <br /> report (Attachment 5). Roy Cloud's significant contributions toward the development of <br /> the local and regional public school education system, early role as advocate of the <br /> teaching profession and strong supporter of local history were considered in the <br /> designation. This two-story home, constructed on a prominent corner of Whipple <br /> Avenue and Iris Street in the mid 1920s is an excellent example of the classical colonial <br /> revival style and is therefore architecturally significant.
