8.C. - Page 2
community's commitment for reuse and recycling; and the size of the piece is
appropriate to create a "challenge" to find the art as part of the lure to Downtown
Redwood City.
The Municipal Code as well as Redwood City's Public Art Guidelines state that the City
Council is the final authority for approval of any public art process and installation.
ANALYSIS
The Civic Cultural Commission is working hard to meet the new General Plan policies
as outlined in the "Building Community Element — Culture and Arts Section." Listed in
the document are the following:
- Policy BC 11.4. Nurture and support local arts organizations, and promote
appreciation of and involvement in the creative arts, including supporting education in
the arts at the elementary, secondary, and post- secondary school levels.
- Program BC 42: Public Art Program. Continue to implement the Redwood City Public
Art Program. Priorities include.
• Develop a Culture and Arts Master Plan
• Create vibrant and appealing public spaces by integrating art into new
development and existing sites
• Contribute to Redwood City's evolving culture and image by ensuring high - quality
public art
• Involve the community and support local artists where ever possible
The Commission has worked closely with the Peninsula Arts Council on this project and
has also involved the Downtown Business Group to host two mixers and gain feedback
on the project and sculpture. "B.O.B. ", as the Birds on Broadway Project is now known,
has been warmly received by business owners, residents, and artisans alike, and for the
past two months, B.O.B. has been on display in several downtown storefronts.
ALTERNATIVES
1. Reject the Birds on Broadway Project
2. Ask the Civic Cultural Commission to work with the Peninsula Arts Council on a
different art piece for the project and come back to City Council for approval
FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for the Birds on Broadway public art project was granted to the Peninsula Arts
Council through the Civic Cultural Commission's large grants account.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
N/A
