Tied
October 27, 2003
Subject
Final Acceptance — Wellesley Crescent Landscape/Traffic Improvements Project
Recommendation
Accept the Wellesley Crescent Landscape/Traffic Improvements, approve change
order, and authorize the release of bonds and retention.
Background
On July 14, 2003, the City Council awarded the contract for the Wellesley Crescent
Landscape/Traffic Improvements Project to JJR Construction, of San Mateo, California
for their bid of $124,945.00.
The Wellesley Crescent Landscape/Traffic Improvements were approved as part of the
2002/2003 Capital Improvement Program. The improvements constructed consisted of
landscaped concrete medians placed at each intersection entering the circle. The
improvements were done to address local residents' concerns regarding the speed of
vehicles going around the circle, which also serves as a community park. The other
goal was to provide more clarity as to the direction of traffic flow.
Prior to the project, only temporary paint striping was used causing some unaware
motorists to travel in the wrong direction. It was also common for many vehicles to
speed around the circle, and fail to observe stop signs.
The project has been successfully completed in accordance to the Plans and
Specifications for a total cost of $126,549.00. Change orders and quantity adjustments
resulted in an additional cost of $1,604.00, which is less than 2% of the original bid
price. The project was completed by the contractor nearly two weeks early.
Alternative
Do not approve the Final Acceptance of this project, which would be contrary to Council
priorities.
