6.2.A. - Page 1 <br /> RE PO RT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the Cit Mana er <br /> May 21, 2012 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Final Acceptance — 2011-2012 Watermain Replacement Project <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Accept, by motion, the 2011-2012 Watermain Replacement Project and authorize the <br /> release of bonds and retention according to city procedures. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> The city systematically replaces sections of aging watermain infrastructure to ensure the <br /> continued reliability of the system and to provide for improved fire protection. Annually, <br /> Community Development Department staff identifies and targets for replacement <br /> pipeline sections that have experienced service disruptions, excessive maintenance <br /> requirements, or capacity limitations due to age and size. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> On August 22, 2011 the City Council awarded the construction contract for the 2011- <br /> 2012 Watermain Replacement Project to Shaw Pipeline, Inc., of San Francisco in the <br /> amount of $790,200. Approximately 4,920 linear feet of deteriorated cast iron water <br /> pipeline was replaced with more durable PVC pipe. The project area included Goodwin <br /> Avenue, Poplar Avenue, Junipero Avenue, and Oak Avenue, as shown on the attached <br /> graphic. Improvements also included replacement of residential services, fire hydrants, <br /> and water valves to improve the quality, performance and reliability of the water system <br /> for area residents. <br /> The project has been completed in accordance with the plans and specifications and <br /> within the timeframe allowed by contract for a total cost of $822,919 which is 4.1 % <br /> higher than the original bid amount. One change order was issued for the amount of <br /> $32,719 resulting from quantity adjustments. An additional 230 feet of water main pipe <br /> and 80 feet of storm drain pipe were installed. <br /> ALTERNATIVES <br /> Council may choose not to accept the project or authorize the release of bonds and <br /> retention which would be contrary to the terms of the contract, prior Council action, and <br /> public contracting code. <br /> FISCAL IMPACT <br />
