6.1.E. - Page 1 <br /> RE PO RT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the Cit Mana er <br /> June 25, 2012 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Temporary Suspension of Parking Meter Rates in Downtown <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Approve by motion, the temporary suspension of parking meter rates in downtown on <br /> Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 as strict compliance with Division 4 of the Parking <br /> Ordinance would not serve the public interest. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> Because of the July 4t" celebration, parade route and various celebration-related <br /> events, much of downtown's on-street metered parking spaces will be unavailable. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> To accommodate events and activities in the downtown area on the July 4t" holiday, <br /> staff requests Council approve the suspension of parking meter rates on July 4, 2012 <br /> from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm on the following streets and city-owned parking lots: 1) <br /> all streets bounded by Veterans Boulevard, Brewster Avenue, EI Camino Real, and <br /> Walnut Street, and 2) off-street parking lots: Perry Lot, Winslow Lot, Main Street Lot, <br /> City Hall lot, and Library Lots A and B. <br /> City Council may temporarily suspend parking meter rates pursuant to City Municipal <br /> Code Chapter 20, Article VII, Division 4, Section 20.133: <br /> Sec. 20.133. PROVISIONS FOR TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF METER <br /> RATES: <br /> The provisions of this Division may be suspended from time to time by motion of <br /> the City Council in any case where the Council finds that strict compliance would <br /> not serve the public interest, including but not limited to the use of public streets <br /> and sidewalks for celebrations, special public events, celebration of holiday <br /> seasons and any other such activity or purpose as the City Council in its sole <br /> discretion shall determine.
