6.1.L. - Page 1 <br /> RE PO RT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the Cit Mana er <br /> July 9, 2012 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Agreement between the City of Redwood City and the County of San Mateo for Alcohol <br /> and Drug Abuse Prevention Services for fiscal year 2012-13. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement between the City of <br /> Redwood City, as fiscal agent for Redwood City 2020, and the County of San Mateo for <br /> a County grant in the amount of $150,000 for fiscal year 2012-13 for Alcohol and Drug <br /> Prevention Services. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> Since 2008, Redwood City 2020 has led a collaborative effort in Redwood City to <br /> address environmental factors that contribute to alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse <br /> behaviors. Redwood City 2020 is currently in the fourth year of implementing a program <br /> around this issue. It is intended to: decrease youth access to and abuse of AOD; <br /> reduce community tolerance of youth AOD use/abuse; diminish youth AOD related <br /> problems; increase youth participation in meaningful opportunities connected to their <br /> schools, families and communities; create and enforce healthy policies aimed at making <br /> AOD use unappealing, and; raise community support and recognition of AOD issues <br /> and efforts. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services offers this grant as part of <br /> Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Strategy which focuses on the environmental <br /> factors that impact the issue. This is a continuing grant by San Mateo County provided <br /> to Redwood City 2020 in support of the goals noted above. Redwood City 2020 <br /> facilitates the Redwood City/North Fair Oaks Prevention Partnership and distributes <br /> resources from this grant to support activities such as parent and youth educational <br /> programs, assessments relating to youth access to drugs and alcohol and corner store <br /> makeovers. <br /> A number of partner agencies and organizations have direct roles in supporting <br /> Redwood City 2020 and the collaborative prevention strategies in this plan, illustrating <br /> the widespread need and attention that this critical issue holds throughout the <br />
