6.1.E. - Page 1 RE PO RT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the Cit Mana er July 9, 2012 SUBJECT Agreement for support of the Redwood City Community Schools for FY 2012/2013 RECOMMENDATION Approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement between the City of Redwood City, County of San Mateo, and the Redwood City School District for support of the Redwood City Community Schools for fiscal year 2012/2013. BACKGROUND Several years ago, the City of Redwood City (City) in partnership with the Redwood City School District (District) and the County of San Mateo (County) agreed to assist the Community Schools to sustain their work at Fair Oaks, Hoover, Kennedy and Taft Schools. In the past two years, Garfield and Hawes have become Community Schools and now the six schools serve nearly half of the students in Redwood City School District. The Community Schools were established to actively engage Redwood City residents, educators and human services providers in supporting neighborhood children to become successful learners. The Community Schools provide integrated support for students and families, including health services, family support services, parent- community partnerships, adult education, and after-school programs. This program is overseen by the Redwood City School District and supported by Redwood City 2020. The Community Schools reach students and their families in a way that few approaches are able to do because they are strategically linked to the school communities they serve. ANALYSIS The City, County, and District are funding the core operations of the Community Schools with $100,000 from the City, $113,676 from the County, and $90,000 from the District for fiscal year 2012/2013. The agreement between the City, the County and the District is interdependent: if any one of the partners does not enter into the agreement and does not contribute, then the remaining parties could withdraw their contributions. At this time staff is requesting that Council approve the agreement for fiscal year 2012/2013. All other partners have agreed to continue their contributions for the upcoming year.
