8.A. - Page 359
Statement on Fiager Avenue Aesthetics
I am a Finger Avenue residant or nesghbo•, who waCS, bicycles ar othervrise enjoys the
Pinger Avenue streetscape. I liatle seen the plans for the McGowan nine-lvt development, and
conclude that it wili substantialfy ciegrade the existing visual characte:• and quality of t11e site
and its surroundings.
What is important aesthetically about my reighborhood is the setni-ivra[ cliaracter of the
norih side of'inger Aenue, wi#li anany homes set far back frorn the street. The appearance of
largs an2ounts oopen space with mature,old gi•owkh hees,provides a striking backdrop to
the homes. The contrast ietween the north side af'inger AvenUe and its south side, with its
many quaint, early 20th century bungaows and cottages, is somethiiig that's unique to
Redwvod City anci treasured by its residents,
Exampies af how the Finger Avenue Project signicantl3r degrades the aesthetics af our
neighborhood are:
• Constructioof tvvo hones with wide two-story facades set back the mirzimum
allowab2e distance from the street Tliere are no liouses that large set that close to the
street anywhere in our neighborhoad.
• Nowhere eise on Finger Avenue are hotnes this large plaed on lots this small,
• AlJ af tie homes are af similar size and aIl two-story, as opposed to the mix of tome
sizes and heights that a•e representatve othe nort side of Finger Avenue.
• Most of these n.ine homes will beiewable fram the public street. There is littIe open
space and the homes are only set back a small distance from the nrrrow that setves
them(somfram 3fl—6ft fi•om the alleyway.) Nowhere in aur neighborlood are
houses situated in this fashion.
• A developnent this densely packed is incompatible with the presence of large•mature
trees on ths site, The crrenival loss of these trees will be irreversible.
• Trte brealcup of the north side of Finger Ave, by creating two new intersectons. The
narrow alle►way buiit for the development fails to integrate with Finger Avenue by not
having a sidwalk or planting strip against the roadway.
o The one-way alleyway will require street signs on Pinger Ave to riirect traffic, further
compromising the character of the narth side othe street,
The overal mass and scae af this development is completely out of place in our
neighborhood, out f character:Fo•tte north side of Finger Avenue anB it will only lead to
furiher degradation of the unique ch acter ar►d yuaIity of our st•eet.
.
Name
':
Address Date
.
