8.A. - Page 361
e e o Fi r s
I am a Finger Avenue resident or neighbor, who waks, bicycles or otharwlsenjoys the
inger Avenue streetscape.I have seen the pfans for the McGowan nine-at development,
anci conclude that[t will subskantially degrade the existing visual character and quality
of the site and its sarroundf ngs.
What is important aesthetically about my neighborhood is the semi-rua•al chaiacter aF
the north side of FRnger Avenue, wth many homes set Far back frorn the street. The
appearance oFlarge amounts of open space with mature, ald growth t•ees, praides a
striking backdrap to the iiomes. The contrast between tleorth side oF Finger Avenue
and its south side, with its many cuaint, ear•ly 20th century bungaows and cottages, is
something tnat's unique to Redwvod City and treasured by its residents.
xamples of how the inge•Avenue Project significantly degrades the aesthetics of our
neighborhood are:
• Constructfon of two homes with wide two-story facades set back the mininum
allowabie disCance from te street,There are no houses that large set that close
to the street anywhere in our neighborhood.
• Nowhere else on Finger Avenue are homes this large placed on lots this snail.
• A!! oF the homes are of similar s#ze and a!1 two-story,as oppased to the mix af
home sizes and heights that are represenative of tte north side of Finer
Avenue.
• Most uf these nine homes wiil be viewable from the pulic street. There isittle
open space and the homes are aly set bacfa sniall distance from the narrow
alley that seves them (some from 3ft-- 6ffrom the alleyway,) Nowhere in aur
neighborhood are houses situated in this Fashion.
• A developnnt khis densely packed is incompatib2e with tle presence of large
mature trees on the sf te.The eventual loss of these trees will be irreversible.
• The brealcup of te north side of Ffnger Ave. by creating two new intersections.
The narrow alleyway buitt for the development fails to integrate with Finger
Avenue by not having a sidewalk or planting strip against the roadway,
+ The one-way alleyway will reqire street signs on Finger Ave to direct traFfic,
Furter compromising tlie chaacter ofthe north side oFthe street.
The overall mass ard scale oFthis derelopment is completely out oplace in our
reighbarhood, out af character For the north side of Finger Avenue and it will only lead
to further degradation ofhe unique character and quality of our street.
f
Name r.SiG UZ_A.
Address i Date
