This could be because the ways in which family engagement affects students <br /> changes in middle school or simply because effects are difficult to measure because so few middle school <br /> families are engaged. However, family engagement is complex and entails both formal opportunities at <br /> school as well as informal opportunities for families in and outside of school,making it difficult to collect <br /> data that reflect real levels of engagement.
