6.1.F. - Page 1 RE PO RT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the Cit Mana er July 9, 2012 SUBJECT Agreement between the City of Redwood City and the Youth Leadership Institute for Fiscal Years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 RECOMMENDATION Approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement between the City of Redwood City, as fiscal agent for Redwood City 2020, and the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) for the North Fair Oaks Healthy Corner Store Makeover Project. BACKGROUND For the past two years, Redwood City 2020 has been working on four environmental goals for our Community Wellness initiative. One of those goals is: Make healthy food the easy, affordable and viable option. In furtherance of that goal, Redwood City 2020 submitted a grant proposal to the Kaiser Foundation Hospital Fund in the amount of $75,000 per year for two years to support the North Fair Oaks Corner Store Makeover Project. The grant will be used to support communities in implementing strategies that can help transform local food environments and foster physical activity. ANALYSIS Kaiser awarded the grant to Redwood City 2020 who will manage the entire grant and will subcontract with YLI in the amount of $110,000 for two years to work on those efforts. The remaining grant amount will be used for Technical Support and Evaluation. With this grant, Redwood City 2020 can implement the North Fair Oaks Healthy Corner Store Makeover Project, to work with small business owners, youth, community residents, and organizations located in North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated area of San Mateo County. Redwood City 2020 will work with YLI and other local youth groups to transform four locally-owned small markets, over the two year grant period, by increasing their attractiveness, and improving community access to healthy food options in the stores, while decreasing access to, removing, or making less attractive the unhealthy options (junk food, alcohol, tobacco) through changes in advertisements and product placement.
