L~ch:

We are pleased to have been asked to provide a proposal for performing a geotechnical evaluation
of the old Farm Hill landslide in Redwood City.

We have reviewed the information regarding the subject landslide that you have provided to our
office, and have also visited the site to examine present conditions. The following paragraphs
present our initial impressions regarding the likely stability of the old landslide, outlines a scope of
work for further geotechnical evaluation, and presents an estimate of fees to perform the work.

The top portion of the slide mass originated on two lots on Nob Hill Road, while the toe of the slide
encroached into three lots on Farm Hill Blvd. A detailed history of the slide is not repeated here,
rather only pertinent items relating to the present conditions of the slide are outlined below.

1) Shannon and Wilson presented a fairly extensive analysis of the slide in their report of December,
1967. Their work included six borings (they also identified 4 piezometers installed by others in
December, 1966), and a geologic reconnaissance, which identified a fault that had apparently
created a seepage barrier, producing high pore water pressures within the slope. They
recommended installing a deep drainage gallery at the top of the slope, and constructing a
buttress fill at the base of the slope. They also stated that "If no further movement develops this
winter after construction of the drainage gallery, then the necessity for constructing the buttress
at the toe of the slide should be reviewed. It is possible that the slide may be adequately stable
without the buttress."

Geotechnical Engineering · Geo-environmental Engineering · Geology & Engineering Geology
