Proclamation: Honoring Community Volunteers Carol Platner and Lynn <br /> Gardner — presented by Dan Smith, Police Officer and Justin <br /> Velasquez, Fire Fighter/Engineer <br /> Mayor Ira thanked the recipients for all their hard work and appreciated their <br /> commitment to making this a better community. Firefighter/Engineer Velasquez <br /> thanked the two recipients for their dedication. Officer Smith thanked the finro <br /> community members and provided additional details on their altruistic work. Firefighter <br /> Velasquez attempted to show a video. <br /> B. Proclamation: March 2010 as American Red Cross Month - Cesar Castillo, <br /> American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter <br /> Mr. Cesar Castillo was present to receive the proclamation and Mayor Ira thanked the <br /> representative from the American Red Cross. Mr. Castillo provided some statistics and <br /> reported on recent events. He thanked the Council for the proclamation. <br /> Vice Mayor Aguirre added that the volunteer work that is done by this organization is <br /> remarkable. <br /> 6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> Bryan Beck read a letter that has been published opposing the Saltworks project and its <br /> study. He referred to a number of current and former elected officials who signed it. Mr. <br /> Beck provided reasons why these 90 elected officials cannot support the project. <br /> Lee Callister, a resident of docktown, read from a San Francisco Chronicle editorial and <br /> stated his opposition to the development on the Saltworks property. He provided <br /> reasons why these lands should not be what he called "paved over". He opined this is <br /> wrong-headed development. He referred to the Netherlands and Norway where floating <br /> projects are being considered with creativity. <br /> Pat Safford referred to the Seaport Center area and how she was surprised with all the <br /> activity going down in that area. She reported that there are hundreds of acres of <br /> public access with public areas and benches. She asked everybody to go see that area <br /> and enjoy it. <br /> Kevin McCarthy, Executive Director with the South Bayside Waste Management <br /> Authority, recognized Mr. Ponty, Finance Director, for his hard work on the most recent <br /> bond sale. He presented Mr. Ponty with a plaque honoring him for his 24 years of <br /> service and dedication on their Board. <br /> Gino Gasparini, with Recology, recognized Mr. Ponty, Finance Director for his work on <br /> the board. He thanked Mr. Ponty for his integrity and professionalism. He presented <br /> Mr. Ponty with a replica of a new model of a Recology truck.
