Mr. Vorametsanti said they will move forward to overcome obstacles and employ
whatever resources they have and he agreed with the idea of forming a subcommittee.
Another Council Member spoke in support of the formation of a committee. He
calculated that 15 to 20 percent comes from Redwood City, and rather than figure out
who should do what, Redwood City has shown it cares and should do something about
it. He spoke about the collaboration with Stanford, long-term work with other
jurisdictions, understanding community needs, participation, the need for information on
implementation, funding and getting things done in the short-term.
Vice Mayor Aguirre commented that a subcommittee is only as strong as the members
of that committee, and that in addition to Redwood City Council members, staff, and
Stanford, she would like to have representatives from Menlo Park, Atherton, FEMA, and
landowners too. She spoke on the difficulty in getting other cities interested, and
suggested, that given Mr. Jones' presence, that perhaps there is interest, and he can
take this message back to Atherton. She agreed with other Council Members in
wanting this resolved for City businesses, families and residents.
Mayor Ira said they will keep the same subcommittee with Council Members Bain, Gee
and Pierce serving on it and the subcommittee can determine how to move forward in
dealing with regional issues and the need of significant support and resources from
other cities, communities and local, state and federal agencies. He noted that it would
be a concern for the State Water Resources Control Board if more water were to be
pumped into the bay. He asked that the subcommittee work on obtaining the necessary
funding for the pump station, the need for a large amount of land for a solution, and he
agreed that solutions must be developed on a regional basis
Mr. Bell said he would work with the subcommittee in identifying the short-term options,
regional partners to join the effort, funding and claims, and will plan to come back to
Council with actionable items.
The City Council took a break from approximately 8:38 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.
8.
