6.1.J. - Page 1
RE PO RT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er
September 10, 2012
SUBJECT
Public Allies Silicon Valley/San Francisco Agreement for Americorps Service Positions
at Fair Oaks Community Center
RECOMMENDATION
Approve and authorize the City Manager to sign the Public Allies Silicon Valley/San
Francisco Fiscal Year 2012-2013 Agreement for Americorps Service Positions at Fair
Oaks Community Center.
BACKGROUND
Since 2006, the City has partnered with Public Allies Silicon Valley/San Francisco
(formerly known as Public Allies Silicon Valley) for the placement of AmeriCorps Public
Allies as part of the Information and Referral Program staff.
This partnership has made it possible for the City to better meet the demand for
services at the Fair Oaks Community Center by placing an additional Human Services
Specialist each year for the last six years.
For Fiscal Year 2011-2012 we placed a second Public Ally to serve as Benefits
Navigator as part of the LIBRE Project (Linking Immigrants to Benefits, Resources, and
Education) —with funding received by RWC 2020 from the Grove Foundation.
Public Allies is a national program founded in 1992 with Public Allies affiliates in twenty
locations throughout the United States. Public Allies San Francisco/Silicon Valley has
been serving the Peninsula since 1995.
ANALYSIS
For Fiscal Year 2012-2013, we plan to again have two Public Allies — one human
services specialist and one benefits navigator. Private foundation grants will fund both
AmeriCorps positions for FY 2012-2013.
The Public Allies Agreement for 2012-2013 covers the period from September 2012 to
June 2013. Redwood City will pay Public Allies San Francisco/Silicon Valley a total of
$32,000 in matching funds towards the Ally's stipend.
