6.2.A. - Page 1
RE PO RT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er
September 10, 2012
SUBJECT
Final Acceptance — Marlin Park Play Area Renovation Project
RECOMMENDATION
Accept, by motion, the Marlin Park Play Area Renovation Project and authorize the
release of bonds and retention according to city procedures.
BACKGROUND
On February 27, 2012, Council awarded the construction contract for the Marlin Park
Play Area Renovation Project to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, Suarez
& Munoz Construction Inc. of Hayward, for $182,470.
ANALYSIS
The project, located in Redwood Shores, included a new concrete walkway, new shade
trees and irrigation, new play equipment, upgraded subsurface drainage, a new
enclosed toddler play area, new drinking fountain, new trash and recycling enclosures,
new benches and two new ADA accessible picnic areas. The accessible parking area
near the playground was also updated. The sand in the play areas was replaced with
certified playground wood chips to provide fall protection and wheelchair accessibility
throughout the play areas.
Unlike previous renovation park projects that removed and discarded existing structures
and play equipment, this project reused posts, footings, and other reusable parts. This
generated a cost savings of approximately $30,000 and reduced the amount of material
for disposal into a landfill.
The Marlin Park Play Area Renovation Project was successfully completed in
accordance with the plans and specifications and within the time allowed for a total
contract cost of $199,681.01. Change orders were issued for the sum total of
$17,211.01, which is 9.4% more than the awarded contract amount. Change orders
were issued to remove and dispose of unforeseen concrete footings, modifying the top
and bottom rails for the chain link fencing, and quantity adjustments for concrete paving
and sod.
Marlin Park was re-opened to the public on Saturday, August 4, 2012.
