6.4.G. - Page 2
Key benefits of VDI include:
• Centralized administration of desktops from any location reducing the complexity
of upgrades, patches and desktop maintenance by allowing IT technicians to
perform these tasks in the data center, thus minimizing or eliminating site visits
and travel time.
• Faster, more reliable, and easier backup and recovery of desktops due to
centralized hosting and administration.
• Secure access to their desktop for mobile employees from remote locations.
• Streamlined creation of new desktops from a central server.
• Time optimization for help desk personnel by reducing the time spent on
deploying new desktops by eliminating time consuming tasks such as
researching, specifying, ordering, unpacking, loading software, and delivering
new PC's. IT personnel will have more time to focus on mission critical activities.
• Standardized desktop environments.
IT staff has completed a comparative analysis of deploying 100 virtual desktops versus
regular PCs. On average deploying and maintaining a virtual desktop can cost $480
less per desktop during the first year. Each subsequent year the savings of maintaining
a virtual desktop over a traditional PC can be as high as $520.
This recommended appropriation is for the first phase of a potentially much wider
implementation. The focus will be to build the necessary infrastructure which includes
the purchase of the server hardware and software to create the virtual desktop
infrastructure, the hardware to speed the existing network from the current 10/100
megabits per second to 1 gigabit per second, and the initial deployment of up to 100
virtual desktops.
ALTERNATIVES
Continue with the current system of deploying regular desktops for users based upon
the replacement lifecycle of the desktops.
FISCAL IMPACT
With an estimated fund balance of $2.5 million as of June 30, 2013 sufficient funds are
available to support this requested appropriation.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
Not a project under the California Environmental Quality Act.
——.—

TONY GELPHMAN
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGER
