7.A. - Page 1 RE PO RT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the Cit Mana er September 10, 2012 SUBJECT Make an appointment to the Senior Affairs Commission for an unfilled seat expiring May 31, 2014 RECOMMENDATION Make an appointment to an unfilled seat on the Senior Affairs Commission by considering the one applicant (who was previously interviewed by the City Council for another seat) and who has shown an interest to serve: Ms. Josephine A. Thompson. Council could also consider reopening the recruitment for this unfilled seat and seek other applicants. BACKGROUND At its Council Meeting of June 25, 2012, the City Council made appointments to numerous Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs). At that same meeting, the City Council discussed reaching out to applicants that had been interviewed but not appointed to see if they would consider vacant seats on other BCCs they did not apply for. ANALYSIS Due to the high caliber of BCC applicants interviewed by the City Council, Council wanted to provide these applicants with an opportunity to serve in another BCC should they be interested. The Mayor reached out to four applicants (from the last two recruitments) and invited them to consider this additional opportunity on the Senior Affairs Commission. One interviewed applicant responded and is willing to serve — Ms. Josephine A. Thompson. This applicant previously applied and was interviewed for a seat on the Planning Commission. It is the Council's prerogative to appoint this applicant or direct staff to reopen the recruitment. Since the meeting of June 25, 2012, staff has been approached by members of the Senior Affairs Commission inquiring about the process and suggesting that there might be additional applicants interested should the recruitment reopen. ALTERNATIVES Council may choose not to appoint and reopen the recruitment. Staff would then ask Council to rate applicants for interviewing and schedule a special meeting for Council to interview the applicants. Subsequently, Council would make the appointment at a regular City Council meeting.
