Two workshops that were especially interesting included:
"Mobile Apps for City Services" and"Do you LOVE your City".
Mobile Apps: The City of Rancho Cucamonga and Redlands presented their experience with the
development of mobile applications to specific issues with sidewalk inspection, repair and
planning; weed abatement program and 311 service. The 311 service enables a community
member to take a picture of a problem in the community, enter text with a description of the
problem and send it to the city. The staff can layer the information on a GIS grid of the city, see
the magnitude of the problem, enter it into the work system, have the information available for
multiple departmental input and make the assignment of work A loop that includes responding
to the resident or residents has increased satisfaction with the city's work, engaged community
members and enabled staff resources to be used more effectively. Hearing from other cities that
have created or used different aps can help Redwood City benefit from their experience.
"Do you love your City?"Author Peter Kakiyama shared his experience with cities that go
beyond the basic functional relationship that residents have with their cities. He cited the Gallup
study that places higher engagement of the residents had a higher level of vitality, which is
demonstrated by resident involvement, and has fiscal benefits as well. Cities must be beyond the
functional and safe. Community members want comfortable, convivial, interesting and FUN. He
gave a number of examples of cities that have done this successfully without a substantial
investment of funds. Primarily he discussed involving community members as co-creators and
supporting their efforts, as opposed to a city-led effort. Art, music, entertainment and involving
folks in participation are the keys that he recommended.
Pll share my notes with the City Manager and Mayor to extend this information.
 F
September 19, 2012
Barbara Pierce
Council Member
The Administrative Code requires reports of conferences or meetings for which a council member requests per diem or expense reimbursement.
Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting.
