Commission for the thought that went into this. This Council Member had concerns with
businesses going in and then once the 5-year period expires how to handle such
situation. He supports a taskforce and he is ready to assist. One Council Member
addressed the issue of SkateWorks and clarified that the City had nothing to do with its
objective and how it left for another opportunity.
The Vice Mayor thanked everyone for their commitment and he sees this as a catalyst
for a partnership befinreen the city and businesses. He concurs with having a taskforce
returning sometime in the Fall. He disagreed with comments about the Council not
caring about downtown especially in light of all the Council is working on to make it a
real success. Another Council Member thanked staff for the research, listening to the
issues and for trying to move us forward. Even though ultimately the Council might go a
different route staff's work was meaningful and valuable. Mr. Ekern said that he feels
successful by getting everybody here tonight. Mayor Aguirre thanked all those present
and she really appreciated the discussion. She noted that there was a lot of
misinformation and many had signed a petition based on incorrect facts. She said that
what she heard is that there is going to be a taskforce, without a timeline on it, but she
does see some urgency for some property owners. She clarified that with the absentee
owners sometimes it is more what peer pressure can do then what the City can do.
M/S Seybert/Pierce to extend to the meeting to 11:15 pm. Motion carried 6-0 by voice
vote with Council Member Ira recused.
M/S Gee/Seybert to appoint a community task force to work with Council, staff, local
businesses, local retailers, building owners, and others to develop a plan to attract and
retain retail businesses within our powntown Precise Plan boundaries and to report
back with progress or status no later than six-months from tonight's meeting. Motion
carried 6-0 with Council Member Ira recused by voice vote.
MINUTE ORDER 12-107
One Council Member was ready to make a motion to approve the wording changes.
City Attorney Thompson said it might be preferable to address this as a whole at a later
time. Motion withdrawn by the maker and second.
Council consensus was to continue those portions of wording edits to a future Consent
Calendar for Council action (Council Member Ira recused).
